Candy Bar

"Pretty funny; lacking something however?"

submission: Candy Bar
date: October 25, 2004

Heheh, this was quite funny. My favourite part was the very end, when that wee sweet set them off all over again... they haven't learned their lesson or what!?

I liked the art; not particularly detailed, but the characters are feel and cutesy and 'nice'.

It could maybe do with more in the way of sound effects, and perhaps some more vocals from the two kids. Should they be hurling insults at each other or something?

There's only really one technical problem, that you yourself picked up on: The flash can run pretty slowly, especially on old-age comps like mine. The first section of music finished long before the candy bar fell in the bin. This did ruin it a bit for me, as the atmosphere was lost before the climax!
To fix this problem for slow comps, I'd recommend that you set the music's sound to 'stream' rather than 'event.' That way the movie skips frames to keep in time with the music.

Overall, i think this could be something more; it's lacking a certain something to make it truly great. Still, it's far from a bad flash effort! Please consider some of my points, and I hope that you will continue to improve and nurture your skills. :)

Author's Response:

As I said in a previous post I tried to stream it but that did not work. I won't go on babbling about that but it simply didn't work. If your computer is that slow you can view the downloadable versions for PC or Mac . I posted about in a previous comment below but here is the link again: http://homepage.mac.com/ibook238/candybar.html In the Lag-free versions the movie runs fine and the music fits in PERFECTLY with the movie. I'm glad you liked it. Thanks.

Like Jailbait?

"Funny, but true too."

submission: Like Jailbait?

This made me laugh. Some of them were actually quite hard to guess, like the Mickey Mouse T-shirt girl.
It also makes a very important point about the hypocrisy in society, as you say. It's especially hypocritical to me, considering that in my country, they're all legal! (The age of consent in the UK is 16.)

Purely on the 'game' aspect of this, it's only worth playing once. Good work though, Walrus.

Counter Parts - Part 1

"good work, but needs more action, and music!"

date: October 24, 2004

This looks like it will be not a bad series, if you work hard enough on the action and story. The graphics are good enough, i actually quite like the silhouette style of the characters.

What this also really needs is some music! Music imparts atmosphere and emotion to movies, without they are usually quite boring. I think some loud techno/metal or some spooky atmospheric music wuld do well here.

It could maybe do with being pacier too. the action in this episode went quite slowly, I thought.

Author's Response:

The second one will be all action! I'll go looking for music for that part today or tomorrow.

Geriatric Skeet Shooting

"not bad..."

date: July 27, 2004

That was funny for a bit, but it got boring quite quickly. Try adding more features?

There's an glitch in this game - When you shoot a geriatric, and they're done exploding, they reform and act as if you never him them! Sort this please?

And they perspective view of the bricks in the wall is inverted. It looks very wrong.

My Brothers an Irishman!

"great flash, but did you optimise?"

date: July 26, 2004

For over 5Mb, I was expecting an epic flash! thiswas waaay too short in length in relation to the filesize. Your audio doesn't sound very compressed at all. while it suns better this way, it also bloats the filesize. Read the newgrounds tutorial on optimising your audio.

Okay, with that bit out of the way, let me say this was a very funny flash! The leprechaun came out with some great lines. The John in your movie reminds me a lot of the Jon from Garfield. There is a point in the movie when he even looks like Jon, right after when Derby finds the golden potato.

The graphics are very well drawn in this, you definetly have a talent for drawing. It quite detailed.

I want to see the next episode of this! Maybe if you optimise this one, you could get the whole story into one file.

Author's Response:

Im still a noob to flash and I realise now where the mistakes were made, hopefully ill reconcile them one day. Funnily enough I wanted John to be the Garfield John originally so I drew him like it too, but I figured too many people would be confused, however as you so noticed, I left John in there for one shot where he still looks like Garfield John

Dragon Maker 3

"good stuff, but needs more!"

submission: Dragon Maker 3
date: July 25, 2004

this is a nice creator/dress-up flash. The graphics look really good and the music was not bad. I really like the print feature, now you can actually keep a copy of your creation!

The customisation was limited thougb. The should have been more dragon poses, and/or different body parts to choose from. More accesories would have been nice (though i suppose it harder to accessorise a dragon than a person, heh).

And also consider letting a user chose their colours from the whole range (like in balloon duel), instead of just a few presets. Being able to makethe highlights a different colour from the main body was pretty cool though, you can get some pretty cool lighting effects by playing about with that.

And one small technical thing - the 'reset' and 'credits' buttons do the same thing. I wasn't expecting to have the flash reset after finding out the author's name!

Author's Response:

good ideas, but one question, do you know how they did that in ballon dual? i wanted to do that but couldnt figure it out.

-Zombie Nation- Ep 1.4

"well done, again"

date: July 25, 2004

this is the best episode yet! I was seriously laughing out loud when i first watched it. This one wasn't so explicitly violent, but the comedy more than namde up for that.

I love the change in their clothing, the football shirts are very well-done; more detialed than the plain colours they wore in previous episodes. The trainers look pretty cool as well.

The music was good again, i love that chemical brothers tune, and blur! one thing about the voice acting - kurt sounded as if he was laughing his arse off with recording his lines at times.

Another great episode though, keep up the good work man. And thanks for a mention in the credits! It's my birthday today, and that little surprise just made today even better, heheh.

Author's Response:

We were all laughing are arses off when we were doing the record because James kept making dodgy noise into the microphone and it sounds really weird.

Super Mario Toads Rage 2

"Not bad"

date: July 24, 2004

i really love frame-by-frame flash. When it's done well it looks so much more lush than simple tweening. However yours was not very well done, it would be much better with more frames. The action in the movie was good though, I liked the fireball part, and also the headbutting, that was quite funny.

The musicwas great, really dramatic stuff. The lack of sound effects during the action sequence was disappointing, however. Fight scenes are always more satisfying to watch when there are good, powerful sfx.

This was overall a pretty cool short though. keep the series going!

"This was a very good tutorial..."

date: July 23, 2004

This was very helpful, i was looking for how to display bytes loaded and now i know how - thanks NightDuck.

One bad thing about your tutorial though, was the navigation. There was no back button, so you could back up if you missed a step for example. You should fix that for next time.
